History
The town of Dumfries began in 1690 around a grist mill on Quantico Creek. Many Dumfries properties were developed around the mill during this time, and the small site gradually grew into a sizeable village. Dumfries was officially chartered in May of 1749, making it the oldest official town in the state of Virginia. The town's economy was first based on tobacco, and later wheat.
